REVIEW: Khold - Krek Tabu Recordings, 2005
8/10
Khold - Krek - cover art Dimmu Borgir's and Satyricon's more liberal take on the dark arts aside, the Norwegian black metal scene had pretty much reached a standstill when Khold's debut "Masterpiss Of Pain" suddenly made Norwegian black metal exciting once again in 2001. Spearheaded by former Tulus member Gard they have remained productive since then and are now about to unleash the fury of their fourth full-length assault "Krek" (roughly translated as 'Scum'). Khold have made a name for themselves by serving as the antithesis to more traditional fast-paced black metal, settling with a mid-speed, sludgy but still primitive and raw style that have captured the attention of many extreme metal fans. The rough edged vocals from Gard and lyrics written in Norwegian further add to the uniqueness of their sound which has only changed very little during their years of existence. With careful song writing, catchy hooks and tasteful minimalism, Khold once again show us that you do not have to pound your instruments to death in order to create dark and sinister music. Solid, even and reliable as usual.
