The second album from Norway's fearsome foursome,
"Phantom" basically picks up where their debut, "Masterpiss Of Pain", left
off. "Dødens Grøde" begins as a pretty "rocking" song, but
quickly moves into the mid-paced black metal trudging. I liked the bass lines
on "Skjebnevette", and the riffing on "Døde Fuglers Sang", but was
not into the Soundgarden-like riffs on ""Hekseformular I Vev" at all. The
monotonous pace of the album shifts up a half gear on "Fra Grav Til
Mørke", though Khold never actually reaches what I'd consider a fast
pace. This is my calamity with this band. While I appreciate their steady
slower sound in a scene rife with "fast only" bands, a bit of variety would
perk my ears up a little. Granted, I'm probably not a person whom Khold
considers their target audience, but their style leaves quite a bit to be
desired for me. I will give them many hails for including English song titles
on their promo CD this time, though, but simply cannot get into their songs. I
felt that their debut album had more emotions coursing through it, and I could
pick up on them more clearly than I can with "Phantom". Maybe some more time
could have been spent writing stand-out material: I don't know. The
production is quite good; Satyr is listed as having been involved in this
process. PREFERRED TRACKS: "Døde Fuglers Sang", "Ord I
Flammer".
