REVIEW: Klimt 1918 - Just In Case We'll Never Meet Again (Soundtrack For The Cassette Generation Prophecy Productions, 2008
8.5/10
Klimt 1918 - Just In Case We'll Never Meet Again (Soundtrack For The Cassette Generation - cover art Italy has been known for its thousand years old culture, great food and many sights but in the past few years an increasing number of metal and rock bands have drawn attention to this country in the South of Europe besides the usual cheese rock that was made so popular by their national stars like Eros Ramazotti. Although the lot of Italian bands has devoted themselves to the more classic styles, KLIMT 1918 took a different route, a Northern route one might almost say for they could easily be mistaken for a Scandinavian band. You might guess it already, melancholy is a big keyword to describe what Just In Case We’ll Never Meet Again... sounds like.

Let’s say you like Opeth’s Damnation but want a little less prog, you like Katatonia’s Viva Emptiness or The Great Cold Distance but a little less depressing? Then this record will definitely be your taste. It’s got sadness written all over it but in miniscules, not caps. It’s got great, catchy melodies without being either too cheesy or too sentimental. “Skygazer” is the biggest hit of the album; “The Graduate” reminds of a dream-like scenery while “Atget” could compete with a 30 Seconds to Mars track. Despite all the sentiments, most tracks have just enough speed and energy to guarantee an exciting live experience (I would bet also similar to that of 30 Seconds To Mars).

And why does the band even have this name? The band has stated they felt greatly inspired by the works of Austrian Jugendstil painter Gustav Klimt, 1918 marking the year of his death but also the end of the 1st World War and the end of the Jugendstil era. Know your facts?

A must-have for all friends of melancholic music!
