Koldbrann are offspring of Norwegian Black Metal scene that gives hope to uncorrupted future of country still famous for its previous BM assaults. This is first full length effort of Koldbrann, whom I luckily met in Serbia during their Balkan mini tour. Whole material last for nearly 50 minutes and in first parts it really gives a blasting experience of hate fuelled grim Black Metal, the way it should be. Later it has some a bit slower parts which leads me to conclusion that songs here are composed in various periods. First three of nine songs are good examples of traditional Norway’s BM, fast (not so much, but still...), grim, a pinch of chaotic guitars, somehow dry drums that sound like machinegun (great!) with frost bitten vocal... Then it slows down a little bit, keeping the same production and sound, but adding some standard guitar solutions in songs and therefore loosing some of energy it had previously. Still song structure is good and keeps the dynamics BM needs. Some thigs here reminded me on Satyricon works FROM their early days. Interesting to mention is Phlegethons Bredder song, starting with bizarre guitar riff it goes FROM some doom feeling to more aggressive BM with original guitar parts. I guess it works better if you’re ‘done’? In conclusion, two things: first I really liked some songs here and love to listen them. Second, since I saw these guys live I must say they sounded far more better and angrier than on this CD. For a first release this is quite intriguing and I really look forward to hear more! Material is now released through Desolate Landscapes FROM Scotland.
