REVIEW: Kong - 88-95 Peaceville Records, 2001
7.5/10
Kong - 88-95 - cover art Kong is as many probably already know a Dutch band that dares to make instrumental music that doesn't fit into any given category. Does it work you may wonder? Well, the answer is both yes and no. First I should tell you that this is a compilation album with tracks from their earlier releases, some new versions and one new song called "Workbank 3". The most experimental and electronical sections of their music are at times a little too extreme to sound pleasurable but there is always a heavy groove that keeps pushing the music forward and makes up for the worst parts. There are very few bands who manage to mix metal with the more dance orientated genres but Kong is one of those. They always see to that there are rhythms and beats in their songs to which you can move your feet (and preferably other parts of the body as well...) but they never give up on the heavy sound either. I mentioned that there are very few bands who manage to mix metal with dance music but there are even fewer bands who makes instrumental music sound interesting and exciting the way Kong does. Still it inevitably becomes boring now and then but even Dream Theater has their sleepy instrumental moments. Good instrumental music is however ideal when doing something where you need to concentrate - homework, writing, studying or whatever. Swinging metal might be for you?
