REVIEW: Korova - Dead Like An Angel Napalm Records, 1998
7.5/10
Korova - Dead Like An Angel - cover art I have absolutely no idea where to begin when writing this review. I have listened to this album several times in a row and I still don't know what to think of it. On one hand it is emotional and very beautiful but on the other hand it is also extremely intense, almost to the point of annoying. Korova is now known under the name KorovaKill and have signed to the American extreme metal label Red Stream since Napalm dropped them because of their incommerciality (= poor sales). The band formed as early as 1990 and this is their second album. The brain behind the band is called Christof Niederwieser and he has also helped out his native Austrian friends Angizia with vocals on a couple of their releases. Guess who is handling the drum sticks? Not surprisingly it's Moritz Neuner who has been drumming for most of the Austrian metal bands it seems. These guys are producing some very intense music on this album which sounds like a weird mix of jazz music, classical orchestration, chaotic samples and black metal. There is no way I could describe what Korova sounds like and make you understand. The songs are a little too chaotic and unstructured to be completely oustanding and Korova is no doubt one of the weirdest metal bands I've ever heard. One of the highlights of the album is the female vocals done by Martina Hornbacher (Dreams Of Sanity, Therion, Alas). Psychedelic, dark, chaotic metal with theatrical and often off-key vocals. Recommended to all of you who are looking for something out of the ordinary but beware, this is definitely not for everyone. Stand-out tracks: "Our Reality Dissolves).
