After all these difficulties with Stratovarius (I'm sure you know what I'm talking about), vocalist Timo Kotipelto left the band and now he's back with his second solo album called "Coldness". Right after the release the album was very successful in his home country Finland; the single "Reasons" went straight to #1 and the album to #4 on the charts. So what do we have to expect from this album?
First of all I have to say, even though Timo Kotipelto is known as THE Stratovarius voice, his solo project is different in several aspects - all lyrics were written by himself and the vocals are somehow deeper and more powerful. But now I'll stop comparing this album to Stratovarius. The style is a little different from Kotipelto's first solo album "Waiting For The Dawn" which was still more power metal
oriented and lacked something. Here we have a great combination of bombastic power metal and hard rock and of course a great band consisting of well-known musicians of the metal scene. Like already on the debut, Janne Wirman (Children Of Bodom) took over the
keyboards, Symphony X's Mike Romeo and Juhani Malmberg (Tunnelvision) shared the place on guitars (Antti Wirman played solos), Jari Kainulainen (Stratovarius) on bass and last but not least Mirka Rantanen (Thunderstone) on drums. So you know what you have to expect here.
As you might already see from the title "Coldness" is lyric-wise a very dark album but nevertheless very melodic, powerful and atmospheric. Each song is well arranged, has its own style - either it's heavier or melodic and catchy. Outstanding songs are of course the single "Reasons", "Around", "Take me away" and "Seeds of sorrow". All in all a very impressive album (including some bonus video-material) and not only for Stratovarius fans.
