REVIEW: Kotipelto - Waiting For The Dawn Century Media, 2002
8/10
Kotipelto - Waiting For The Dawn - cover art Timo Kotipelto, one of the two Timo's of Stratovarius, doesn't want to be left behind when everyone else is recording their solo albums and therefore he has now embarked upon a solo career on the side. His first effort is entitled "Waiting For The Dawn" which, after much consideration, is now being released by Century Media. The album lyrics are based on Egyptian mythology and history, a subject that has been close to Kotipelto's heart throughout his life. Having studied singing for five years at Helsinki's Academy Of Music, he was very quick to relieve Timo Tolkki of his vocal duties as he joined Stratovarius in 1994 and he is of course doing a wonderful job with his voice on his first solo album as well. Sometimes the vocals are a little bit too ear-soaring but most of the time they sound really good, especially on the wonderful title track which is one of the most impressive songs I've heard so far this year. Kotipelto has brought with him a whole army of world class metal / prog rock musicians on this album like Michael Romeo (Symphony X), Roland Grapow (ex-Helloween), Janne Wirman (Children Of Bodom, Warmen) and Gas (HIM), just to mention a few. The music is mostly Stratovarius-tinged metal but I think it is more varied and vivid than the last couple of Stratovarius releases. Stand-out tracks: "Travel Through Time", "Battle Of The Gods", "Waiting For The Dawn".
