REVIEW: Kreator - Coma Of Souls Noise Records, 1990
9.5/10
Kreator - Coma Of Souls - cover art ...An acoustic guitar greets us. Nice and serene. ahhhh...peaceful....then....BOOOOM!!!! METAL UP THE ASS!!! "When The Sun Burns Red" is a good way to kick things off, solid thrash from beginning to end. This is a pretty good track throughout, but allow me to point out a couple choice riffs, namely the one underneath the solo and the one after the solo. And this is the biggest strength of the album. Awesome riffs. This is a riff lover's wet dream, folks. An all-you-can-eat riff buffet. One of the main highlights is probably "Terror Zone". It begins with a cool dual harmony intro (Mille and Frank made a great team) and into a midpaced song, that at around 3 minutes or so goes into a fast thrash monster.... and listen to that riff.... oh, yes... that riff. Another amazing riff from the Kreator boys. Another big thing in this album is the very strong and muscular guitar tone, which adds extra punch to already lethal riffs, example being "People Of The Lie". It's a short, but sweet little track that rides on one nifty riff for most of the song and is pushed even further with the thick tone, and it gets the job done, as it compels you to headbang 'til you can't feel your neck anymore.

You also have a cool, even shorter full-on thrasher in "World Beyond". It basically stays in one pace throughout: very fast. But the true highlight of this whole album lies in the middle of "Material World Paranoia". While the song itself is rather average and really nothing special, after the solo, that all changes. Ladies and gentleman, prepare to be hooked, gutted, and hung to dry, but not until your spine is pulled out and used to beat you until your a stain on the ground by the unpapalelled power of ONE OF THE GREATEST RIFFS EVER MADE!!! The king and all shall bow!!! There are many cool riffs here, ones I haven't even mentioned (I want you to fish a few out for yourself) but this is the one that rules them all. Listen. Enjoy. The rest of the album isn't quite as strong, but is by no means bad. There is no such thing as bad when it comes to this album. Yes, this is one AWESOME platter of pure thrash, and not too many can match it. This is certainly one of the greatest thrash albums ever produced.
