REVIEW: Krieg - The Church (EP) Cicatrix Records, 2001
6.5/10
Krieg - The Church (EP) - cover art Ugly and grim material from the US Midwest. Basically, you've got 5 songs of extremely rough and minimal black metal played by Imperial, with 2 session drummers handling the battery. While some other bands come to mind when listening to Krieg, such as Burzum and Revenge, they seem to take things to the farthest possible extremities as far as production and playing go. The guitars are barely discernable for the most part, and the drumming is annoyingly monotonous. "As Graveyard Rites As Darkness Fell" actually has feedback left in the recording. While I can appreciate the primitive aesthetic of most of these bands, that was just bloody painful to hear on a studio CD. Taken from a different session than the rest, the second version of "To Wander The Stars" was, to me, the most interesting song out of the 5, due mainly to the drumming of Teloc Coraxo, who uses more than 4 pieces of his drum kit. Akhenaten of Judas Iscariot fame produced the first 4 songs, though I don't imagine he was expected to do a whole hell of a lot. I have heard better from the extreme black metal scene, but "The Church" is still not a bad little play if you're after this type of thing.
