Krisiun has been a mainstay band in the extreme death metal genre for some time, and if you don't already know them, you suck. After their not so well recieved 2001 release Ageless Venomous, the band recovered pretty well with Works of Carnage (2003), a brutal, riff-packed homage to Slayer and Morbid Angel. And now, at the close of 2004, we have Bloodshed, a mini-release if you will. They haven't written enough new material for it to be considered a new album (only 8 new tracks, 3 of which are intro/outros), but 4 songs from their first release, the Unmerciful Order EP fill out the rest of the release. I admit I'm a little biased since I really do love this band after seeing them live. They gave one of the most energetic and intense performances I've perhaps ever seen, and that impression has undoubtedly lasted on me. However, the songs found on Bloodshed are truly of a high caliber and keep the band firmly planted in one of the top tiers of death metal. Another thing that one has to appreciate about this band is the fact that they have continued to write the same style of music throughout their 12-year career despite the downward trend of underground death metal in the early and mid 90's.
Much to no-one's surprise, almost all of the songs on Bloodshed remain between 2:00 and 3:30. Fast, furious, violent and aggressive, the new tracks rip with some serious speed, leaving a somewhat baffled expression at first, as time really does seem to pass quickly when listening to the album (yeah, it's that fast). Max's blastbeats are neverending and Moyses solos are as scathing as ever, quick and precise. The Brazilian death metallers have hammered their point home with Bloodshed and fans of the band won't be dissappointed. The new songs are definitely superior to the ones on the Unmerciful Order EP, and the difference in sound quality unfortunately detracts from the EP's value. "Slain Fate," "Ominous," and "Hateful Nature" are without a doubt (in my opinion) the best songs on the album. Admittedly this is mostly because they have the best riffs, but that's kind of the only way to separate the different songs as there is little to no difference between the band's approach to songwriting throughout the album. Bloodshed doesn't exactly raise the bar for Krisiun, but it doesn't lower it either. It's yet another solid release from this killer trio and it doesn't dissappoint. Just as a final word of advice, if Krisiun ever performs live near you, make sure to be there. You will be blown away, guarenteed!
