REVIEW: Labrat - Ruining It For Everyone Visible Noise, 2002
7/10
Labrat - Ruining It For Everyone - cover art The London based grind / noisecore band Labrat have been around for some years now and have made an impression on the world with their ability to use the word cunt in every sentence... This kind of grindcore "humour" does not do anything to impress me, rather the contrary, but I do still fancy this kind of music if it is well done and Labrat certainly know what they are doing. While maintaining the Napalm Death influences throughout the whole album with relentless intensity and distorted screams they also manage to squeeze in some thrashier riffs and of course also the mandatory spoken spook samples. At times they remind me a little of the American masters of grind - Pig Destroyer - which is one of the leading acts of the genre today in my opinion. The only problems I have with this disc is that I think the vocals are a little low in the mix and the music tends to get a little monotonous sometimes with repeated riffs. Other than that the production is close to perfect. All in all this is a quality grindcore release though that should no doubt gain Labrat a number of new fans all over the world. Because of the mix of grindcore and more traditional metal this album should also be able to appeal not only to grindcore fanatics but to a more diverse metal crowd. The final track "Two Pigs Fucking" actually sounds very much like Swedish power thrashers The Haunted. Stand-out tracks: "Rest Among The Silt", "Two Pigs Fucking".
