Here we have a demo of Spanish band Lacrima Cristi named "Last breath". According to the information I have this is their second self-released work. What we have here is five songs with a broad variety of influences: Gothic, Death, Industrial, progressive elements... We could define the sound as "dark-progressive metal".
The cd begins in a calmed mood. A heartbeat, a whispering voice and some atmospheric keyboard lines to create the right ambiance, a kind of intro for the first song, "Bad Omen". The riffs remind me of Pantera's Dimebag Darrell style, so much expanded in the nineties by later bands from Korn to Rammstein. I would like to make more references to industrial metal but this is not my field, hehe, sorry. The heavy guitar riffs go alternating with more progressive ones, in a kind of Opeth-ish instrumental progression. This is combined with simple but nice keyboard lines which portray an atmosphere of darkness and pessimism. The vocals alternate from clean whispering voice (which tends to coincide with the most acoustic and calmed passages) to a grunt between death metal and metalcore. In some moments it reminds me of Max Cavalera (more of his work in Soulfly than in Sepultura) or of Slipknot's vocalist. I think those 2 examples will give a general idea of how the vocals are performed. These vocals are kind of computer-processed, to gain distortion and aggressiveness. This gives a touch of industrial scent to the album, something that I usually do not tend to like, but in this case I do admit that it fits perfectly with the music. These patterns are repeated throughout the whole CD. Sometimes we find parts closer to doom metal, with a clean mourning voice lamenting and accompanied by acoustic guitars and keyboards. These parts alternate with the heaviest ones in a kind of up and down process.
As their musical style requires a clean and powerful production (we are not talking of raw black metal, hehe), I have to state that the sound here is not as good as it should be (let's remember that this is a demo), though each instrument is in its right place and the sound will suppose no problem in order for us to enjoy the album. I have to mention too that this whole demo is entirely available for download from their official website, a good idea that in my opinion novel bands should put into practice.
I am not particularly fond of this musical style but I must say that they have recorded a nice demo that I have enjoyed listening to. If they have the chance of recording a whole album in a professional studio I bet it will be a work worthy to be paid attention.
