REVIEW: Lacrimas Profundere - Ave End Napalm Records, 2004
8/10
Lacrimas Profundere - Ave End - cover art Sadness, heaviness and melancholy combined has shown to be a highly successful concept in modern music today and the most apparent example is the gothic rock / metal genre. It is not until the last few years that metal in all forms has become popular for real again and this has resulted in a lot of attention for bands from all genres. Most bands who today are given this kind of attention has been around for like ten years and worked hard hidden from the non-protruding eye of the mainstream. One of these is the German gothic rock band Lacrimas Profundere who have now become been very successful in German DJ charts and were able to go on tour in Mexico in 2002. The new album "Ave End" is the band's fifth so far and a perfect soundtrack to tragedy and despair. There is a somber atmosphere surrounding these eleven rock oriented songs which share the common characteristic that is the dark not-overly-gothic-sounding vocals from original member Christopher Schmid. Many vocalists in this genre has a tendency to exaggerate but Christopher's voice feels nice and relaxed for most of the time. The production is heavy and clear and beautiful moments like the intro of the title track and the ultra-intense and slightly Moonspell-ish "Astronautumn" will make gothic rock / metal fans from all over the world fall in love with this German band if you have not done so already. The only negative side of this album is that there is not enough distinction between all different songs and this is what keeps Lacrimas Profundere one step behind the absolute gothic rock elite at the moment. Stand-out tracks: "Ave End", "Sarah Lou", "Astronautumn".
