It's with album such as
this one that you can see that doom music wasn't born yesterday. What is my
point? Well, this release, to my ears, has a very Pink Floydish sound and
influence. Specially regarding the guitar, clean electric or acoustic, the
mood, the way that Christopher Schmid sings. All of this is close to what
these old progger used to do. It's just heavier, with more punch and no long
pieces. Mostly going around five minutes on average. But it's good! I don't
mean to say the opposite. They're not trying to be a tribute or look-alike
type of band either. Pretty catchy at times too. The mood is very melancholic
and sad, which brings in the qualifications for being designated as Doom
Gothic directly from Germany. The main vocal lines are clean male turning into
death once and a while. A female singer appears also on some tracks like
"Melantroduction" and "2 Sec, And A Tear" but the best appearance is on
"Morning...Grey" where the unnamed lady makes an excellent performance. This
song also have a nice piano intro and is a pretty smooth number. If you like
piano and symphonic keys, there's some very delicious partitions on "A
Summer's End". This piece begins a bit like "Tubular Bells", you know the
music from the movie The Exorcist... One of my favorites is "Adorer And
Somebody" with many great acoustic guitar parts over heavier partitions and
when I mentioned sad, with lyrics such as "and when you weep, I understand
what you mean to me", you see what I mean. I would recommend this album to
the friends of Theatre of Tragedy, Eishilig and of course, Pink
Floyd!
