Even though both "Unleashed Memories" and "Comalies" were relatively successful albums it is with "karmacode" that the Italian gothic metal veterans Lacuna Coil are experience their real commercial break-through. High chart positions in their home country, Greece, USA (yes, indeed) and several other countries are proof enough of the fact that they are now becoming a household name after many years of hard work. Then what has changed compared to the past? Not a great deal actually but as we all know success is always a retroactive award that has little to do with the present. Even though the song structures on "Karmacode" are slightly more modern and up-to-date with the Americanized heavy rock sound of today the essence of Lacuna Coil - the dual male / female vocals - remains the same. It can hardly be argued that they owe a lot to Evanescence and, to a lesser extent, even Nightwish, when it comes to creating an international market for their music. "Karmacode" provides a bridge between the band's earlier material and a commercial sound that will appeal more to young followers of the American modern rock / metal scene. Sacrificing personality for money is understandable but it does not always pay off in the end and the new album does unfortunately also suffer from overproduction. The heavier sections are boring as hell but when they focus on moodier and more atmospheric music they are still on top of things. I can't really make up my mind what I think about "Karmacode"; it seems to me as a stepping stone from one point to another and I hope the next album will manifest a clearer vision on where they are heading. Semi-experimental and quasi-impressive.
