REVIEW: Lacuna Coil - Unleashed Memories Century Media, 2001
7/10
Lacuna Coil - Unleashed Memories - cover art The Italian six-piece Lacuna Coil is back again with their second full-length studio album called "Unleashed Memories". If you´re a hardcore black metal fan you can stop reading right now because this is not for you (and not much is...). Lacuna Coil features the beautiful voice of Cristina Scabbia, one of the best female vocalists in the whole world of metal, and also some male vocals from Andrea Ferro which are not that prominent. However they complement each other very nicely in a couple of songs but mostly Cristina´s voice is dominating. Both female and male vocals are clean and strong, thus far from the growling/soprano vocals of many of the new gothic bands. Most of the songs could be described as metal ballads and the music is not really that impressive but the often beautiful and atmospheric vocals make up for this very nicely. Unfortunately some songs tend to be a little boring and I would say that Lacuna Coil is dancing on a dangerously thin thread. Falling from this they could find themselves in the same situation Moonspell got into after their Wolfheart album with plain and mellow music that touches only a few. Lacuna Coil has still not fallen into this trap and hopefully they will not in the future either. The band lives very much off the the voice of Cristina but, believe me, it is still enough to make their music highly listenable. Variation is very important in life and if you don´t mind some mellow, emotionally enchanting metal this is a good choice. "Unleashed Memories" was recorded at the famous Woodhouse Studios in Germany with producer Waldemar Sorychta (Therion, Moonspell, Tiamat...).
