REVIEW: Laethora - March Of The Parasite The End Records, 2007
7/10
Laethora - March Of The Parasite - cover art Laethora is a new Swedish act made up of members of the gothic metal band The Provenance as well as Niklas Sundin from Dark Tranquillity. Side projects do not always make sense, such as Vintersorg's recent Cronian experiment, as they tend to follow a similar musical path, but with Laethora it is different. Very different indeed. Instead of the melancholy of The Provenance or the melodic extravaganza of Dark Tranquillity this is a result of a fascination with B horror movie grind and old school death metal. Despite the direct approach and somewhat primitive nature of the genre, these compositions have not been carved out without thought. The songs are coherent and a few spices have been added in the shape of mandatory samples and tasteful guitar solos. I am also pleased with the fact that they didn't go for a sterile Nuclear Blast production but chose a harsher yet much more organic and suited path instead. Laethora's debut will definitely not revolutionize the metal genre but it is nonetheless a nice piece of unusually diverse brutal death / grind. The album is released by Osmose Productions in Europe and The End Records in North America.
