REVIEW: Lair Of The Minotaur - Carnage Southern Lord Recordings, 2004
6.5/10
Lair Of The Minotaur - Carnage - cover art Southern Lord is one of the most prominent labels dealing with doom metal and related genres. Now they have picked up this young band called Lair Of The Minotaur who are, as the name implies, lyrically inspired by the myths of ancient Greece. On their debut album they take the vibrant yet dismal Black Sabbath riffing and blend it with more aggresive influences from extreme metal pioneers such as Celtic Frost and Venom. Does it sound like chaos is about to break loose? Well, to be honest Lair Of The Minotaur does sometimes suffer from the problem of focusing and collecting their diverse ideas into what others would call a song. Luckily there is a lot of chugging riffs inbetween the - sometimes controlled, sometimes uncontrolled - chaos where you can stop for a second and just bang your head to the music.

"Carnage" is a raw and aggressive album that defies the clean productions of the 90s and our own decade. Instead Lair Of The Minotaur shows their love for the unpolished recordings of the 70s and 80s. Sometimes their sound reminds me of Cathedral but they are more extreme, even nodding substantially towards black metal in the song "The Wolf" which has a very nice darkened section near the end. The emotions of this album range from painfully depressive to violently aggressive. There is a strong groove throughout most of the songs but after a while it seems as if you could take a riff out of one song and place it in another without it making much of a difference. There are no rock hard structures in their songs which is a shame because otherwise their diverse sludge metal could have been much more enjoyable. A fine start for a young band though.

Like the band says in interviews, metal is supposed to be rough, rugged and raw.
