REVIEW: Lair Of The Minotaur - The Ultimate Destroyer Southern Lord Recordings, 2006
8.5/10
Lair Of The Minotaur - The Ultimate Destroyer - cover art Lair of the Minotaur rule. Their brand of Sludge-infested Thrash/Death/Doom is simply unstoppable. It is veritably difficult to believe Pelican's skinsman sits in on this madness since his other band's last outing was a far cry from anything heavy. However, while the jury may still be out in regards to the band named after Scarface's favorite waterfowl, Lair of the Minotaur are back to kill, crush, and destroy. That the band worships Celtic Frost, Venom, and Slayer is not always obvious, well, other than the Celtic Frost fixation and press releases/album stickers that indicate such. This time around Chicago's finest throw in some very noticeable nods to Venom and the mighty Slayer throughout. "Juggernaut of Metal" is indeed just that and serves well as album opener. Some of the songs suffer from longish midsections that could be argued to be interchangeable or otherwise unmemorable, but if the listener grows tired of such an exercise of expansive massiveness, well maybe this sonic abuse just ain't for you, sunshine. LOTM are an underground favorite still underrated in larger Metal circles but the appearance of "Warlord" (from the lads' debut Carnage also from Southern Lord) on Tony Hawk: Underground 3 video game should open the door to more victims for the minotaur.... Step into the lair but leave the ball of string behind, kiddies.
