REVIEW: Lake Of Tears - Forever Autumn Black Mark Production, 1999
8/10
Lake Of Tears - Forever Autumn - cover art The fourth release of the Swedish band Lake of Tears is almost the perfect album for a rainy autumn day. As the title ("Forever Autumn") already might reveal this album creates a very melancholic atmosphere and you can really feel 'autumn' in there. The songs are melodic, dark, but not gloomy and create a certain feeling of depression. You can decide yourself if it's still Gothic rock or already metal but anyway this album is great. Compared to previous Lake of Tears albums this one uses more acoustic parts, is more keyboard-orientated due to the fact that Christian Saarinen is now a full-time member of the band. Furthermore you can also find instruments like flutes, cello and an accordian in here. Simply add Daniel Brennare's vocals and the mixture is complete. Forever Autumn has some heavier songs as well as some slower songs (e.g. title track "Forever Autumn" or "The Blossom Blue") you wouldn't call metal at all. Right in the middle you can find "Otherwheres" which is a great acoustic instrumental song. From my point of view the album is still lacking something I can't find right now, but songs like "Demon You/Lilly Ann" or "So Fell Autumn Rain" definitely show the mood the album expresses. As I said, the album is perfect for autumn days - simply because it is so atmospheric and depressive and doesn't really fit into spring. All there's left to say is that you won't find atmospheric albums like this here that often among Gothic metal albums.
