REVIEW: Lamentu - Liack Inch Productions, 2001
6.5/10
Lamentu - Liack - cover art In the 90's several black metal bands were formed in the town of Sciacca on Sicily, Italy, and now they have created their own record label Inch Productions to reach out with their music to a wider audience. All these bands are connected to each other in different ways and are singing on both an ancient Sicilian dialect and English, hence the weird band names and song titles. Lamentu was formed in 1997 to honour the Liack-Aru demon, "sovereign of the black continent". The music of Lamentu is a mix of death, thrash and black metal with a sound reminding me of the wonderful melodies of Old Man's Child but with a raw Darkthrone edge. There are also some evident African tribal influences which probably is a result of Sicily being so closely linked to the African continent. This gives Lamentu a unique position on today's black metal scene and I really like it when bands try out new things that hasn't been done before as long as it is done well. Lamentu is a band that consists of some talented musicians, just check out the wonderful riffs on "Animalura" and "Aggrisso" and you know what I'm talking about. The production isn't exactly perfect but I don't know if it's because they are looking for a Darkthrone resemblance or not. Whatever the case is Lamentu brings new life into the black metal scene. This is a very interesting debut release from a band that I've never heard of before. This is raw but it is still very melodic.
