REVIEW: Latrodectus - Altered Flesh Adipocere Records, 2003
7/10
Latrodectus - Altered Flesh - cover art Ok, so this one starts out a little slow, sounding like a typical raw black metal album, however if you listen through it once or twice, you'll find that there are quite a few refreshing qualities that present themselves. For example, there are some very atmospheric and moody keyboards on the second half of the recording. While they sort of come out of nowhere, they blend in very nicely and create a new tone for the tracks in which they're incorporated. Most of the tracks have a few more melodic segments and verses than your average black metal band, which is also a nice change. The vocals are nothing really special however. While not poor, they offer nothing new or inventive, and consist almost entirely of your average black metal growls. The drums are pretty good and some of the guitar melodies sound particularly good as well. The keyboards found later in the album are also very well done. "The Being's Damnation" is the first track to really utilize these keyboards, and trust me, they fill out the bands sound very nicely. On a side note, am I the only one that noticed an uncanny similarity between "Alone" and the final track on At The Gates' last release "Slaughter Of The Soul"? Perhaps that's why I like that instrumental so much. The melodic nature of it breaks up the black metal smoothly. The album as a whole is put together effectively, and the only real drawbacks are that the first half of the album is lacking the second's musical variety and atmosphere, and the vocals are too unoriginal sans the Arcturus-esque clean vox on "The Being's Damnation". The production was obviously well done, and for what it's worth, the cover art is very original and adds a nice touch as well.
