REVIEW: Legen Beltza - Insanity Crash Music Inc., 2003
6/10
Legen Beltza - Insanity - cover art The Spanish band Legen Beltza was formed in 1998 and have decided that it is time to bring back the old 80s thrash sound from the San Francisco area. The energetic tunes from bands like Vio-lence, Nuclear Assault and Exodus are probably well-known to these southern European guys who have managed to get signed to the Crash Music label. Crash Music seems to be a label with impressive contacts and strong financial backing since this album, albeit coming from a so far rather unknown band, was mixed by no other than Mr. Jeff Waters himself and the cover artwork was done by the famous French artist JP Fournier (Immortal, Impaled Nazarene, Edguy etc.). I know that there are plenty of people out there who are hardcore fans of the Bay area sound and those of you who are will not be disappointed when hearing this album. Personally I do of course enjoy many bands from those days but I do not think Legen Beltza have that much to offer today. "Insanity" is, despite lots of classic thrash riffs and a professional production, far too generic and it lacks a real identity. It is enjoyable most of the time but not very interesting in the long run. For example, the main riff of "Dying" is more or less nothing but a slightly altered Megadeth riff. Legen Beltza is still a young band though and I am sure that they will become a more mature band in the future.
