REVIEW: Legion - Bloodaeons (demo) Neodawn Productions, 2000
4.5/10
Legion - Bloodaeons (demo) - cover art Legion is a rather new Swedish black metal band, formed in 1996 by the vocalist/bassist Trollheim and the drummer Thurisaz (earlier in Mournful). "Bloodaeons" is their second demo-tape and was recorded in February 2000 at Backbone Studio in Mjölby, not far from where I live. It was engineered by P. Jonsson (Thy Primordial, Indungeon etc.) and mixed by the band. Legion changed their name from Tyrant in 1999 and have undergone several line-up changes to become more serious. They perform old school Swedish black metal in the vein of Marduk, Dark Funeral and others. That means hateful, intense and furious music with screechy vocals and a sharp touch of evil. This is far from symphonic black metal á la Dimmu Borgir or Cradle of Filth and unfortunately their music is not really of Marduk quality. Considering this is an early effort from the band and a demo the material is not that bad though and you can separate at least some melody and nice riffs from the compact and raging background in a couple of the tracks. On the final track you can also in fact hear a nice keyboard chapter although it´s a short one. Legion still has a lot to learn but if they put more effort and a little less fury into composing their songs they could become a black metal act with a much more mature sound and one to count with in the future.
