REVIEW: Lifend - Innerscars Cruz Del Sur Music, 2004
6.5/10
Lifend - Innerscars - cover art Lifend is an Italian band that formed in 1999. Unlike most other bands who have one male and one female vocalist they do not focus on the traditional beauty and the beast concept. Instead Sara's singing style is closer to The Gathering although much more gentle and tender while the male vocals range from death growls to black metal shrieks. None of them do however impress me much and they do not interact that well with each other either most of time, mostly due to the fact that they try hard not to be conventional. The extreme vocals and occasional clean male vocals are mediocre unfortunately but Sara's performance is slightly better. It is impossible to nail down a specific genre whereto you can refer the music of Lifend. As much as they experiment with their vocals, just as much or even more do they experiment in their song writing. The result is that the music is unpredictable but also comes off as chaotic at times.

The band fuses extreme metal with darkwave, ethno, clean female vocals and even jazz elements as they include a saxophone. They experiment beyond their capacity too often but when everything falls into place Lifend can indeed impress the listener. The male and female vocalist can work very well together as can he heard in the wonderful "Open Wound", the best song on the album. This is a band who has huge potential and I am sure they will mature in the future. "Innerscars" is a good start and even though they definitely do not offer an easy listening session they will appeal to those who appreciate their music extreme, a bit quirky and unpredictable. Progressive extreme metal might be a good description of Lifend.
