If there was ever a time for nostalgia then it is when listening to this album from Germany's Ligeia. This female-fronted act began their career back in 1999 and have released one album on their own before signing with Iron Glory Records (this album is licensed to Massacre Records apparently). It was some time now since I heard a really great release from Massacre but this is wonderful ear candy for any metal fan who grew up with bands like Warlock, Stormwitch and Judas Priest. There is even a lot of Doro in the voice of Dani "Mistress" Unglert who is a precious gift that the band definitely should treasure. Old-school heavy metal is often not very advanced musically speaking and that makes it hard for bands to come up with something interesting in this genre. Ligeia is a nice exception though and this is one of the best debut albums (it is their first label supported release) I've heard in a long time. Also note that I usually don't like metal and hard rock ballads very much but the ballad on this album - the closing track "Silence" - is beautiful, mostly thanks to the vocals once again. The lyrics are rather basic stories about gods, heaven and hell just the way 80s metal lyrics should be and if you're a fan of this genre than this is definitely THE album to buy in 2004. Straight-forward, heavy, passionate and well composed. There you have it in a nutshell.
