REVIEW: Liholesie - Primeval Rotation Stygian Crypt Productions, 2004
8/10
Liholesie - Primeval Rotation - cover art "Primeval Rotation" is the debut release from Liholesie. Based on concepts such as ‘Year, The Wheel of Time, mystery of death and birth, rise and fall’ this album falls safely within the bounds of the pagan, dark ambient music that was pioneered in Norway by the likes of Burzum and Isengard (who in turn were influenced by the more synth based output of 70's prog bands such as Tangerine Dream). Production is strong, with all instruments and effects easily heard within the mix, perhaps the only quibble being that the rare programmed drums sound a touch weak, but considering their small role in this release, it’s hardly a major problem. Sever (the project’s only member) proves to be adept at creating a medieval soundscape that never grows boring and also manages to avoid the renaissance faire cheesiness that plagues some bands of this ilk (Mortiis’ ‘The Stargate’ anyone?) by injecting actual feeling into his compositions, and allowing his melodies space to breathe. In all, a very strong debut release from Liholesie which points to a great future for this project.
