REVIEW: Lilitu - The Earth Gods Emerald Factory, 2000
7/10
Lilitu - The Earth Gods - cover art Lilitu is a band hailing out of Hardwick, Georgia, USA, and as the band name implies these young Americans are dedicated to the creation of magnificent black art. Just don´t get me wrong now because they are not a black metal band, actually they are quite difficult to place in a particular genre. Gothic metal is perhaps the most suitable one but on their debut album you will hear everything from symphonic keyboards and clean gothic male vocals to Yngwie Malmsteen guitar solos and tormented early Katatonia growls. Emotions and passion are two important words for this band and that is perhaps what makes them end up sounding like a gothic metal band. One thing I can tell you for sure though - Lilitu is no cheesy power metal band nor a traditional death metal act. This music is made strictly for an atmosphere built on a somber and morose foundation. Even though there are lots of beautiful guitar melodies and nice death growls on this album the production is lacking somewhat in quality as the band themselves admit. This is a talented and hardworking team though and in my ears they do deserve a better production. Since the band members are inspired from such diverse artists as Swans, Deicide, Sentenced and Beethoven you can expect this band to sound a little different. As some of you might have guessed the lyrics on the album are inspired by Kahlil Gibran's book named "The Earth Gods". I have to admit that I haven´t read it though... This is a very interesting band although they are still in need of some extra creativity to make it to the next level. When they started out in 1995 they had a female vocalists and perhaps that is what's missing right now. There are some truelly great moments on this album not to be forgotten - the end of "To Burn Before The Sun" has a nice guitar riff and the first two minutes of "The Earth We Shall Inherit" are simply amazing. Good work and don´t give up fighting!
