REVIEW: Liquid Tension Experiment - Liquid Tension Experiment Magna Carta Records, 1998
8.5/10
Liquid Tension Experiment - Liquid Tension Experiment - cover art Liquid Tension Experiment is as you perhaps already know a studio project from John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy and Jordan Rudess of Dream Theater (at the time of this album's release Rudess was not a member of DT though) and the bass veteran Tony Levin who have been playing with Peter Gabriel and King Crimson. Needless to say this is as progressive as it gets which means that every song contains more changes than a whole album from most other bands. Their debut album displays the collective skills of these guys who are some of the finest musicians in the world. This is an album that has it all; from slow, somewhat jazzy piano tunes to fast and heavy guitar riffs. The opening track "Paradigm Shift" will blow the listener away right from the start with its incredible speed and intricate structure. Instrumental albums have a tendency to become boring but even though this disc contains more than 70 minutes of music my interest was kept alive from beginning to end which is not an easy task to fulfill. This is not all about tempo changes either since there are plenty of melodies as well. The Liquid Tension Experiment is indeed a very exciting and impressing project and even though this album is not as breathtaking as their second release it is still a wonderful display of skills and great music. Definitely recommended if your heart leans towards the progressive side of things.
