Jordan Rudess,
Mike Portnoy and John Petrucci from Dream Theater working together. What could
possibly go wrong? Nothing, really and together with Tony Levin they make up
the musical entity known as Liquid Tension Experiment. This is the most
extreme side of progressive music and it is impossible to grasp the whole
essence of the album without listening to it over and over again. The songs
are some of the most complex pieces of modern music that I have ever heard and
it would be an understatement to call these world class musicians talented.
The first album from the foursome showed the potential within the band but
they didn't quite take off the way I expected them to. Perhaps they needed
some time to work out their own sound because this second album is much more
impressive when it comes to the song writing. There was nothing wrong with the
instrumental capabilities on the first album but the songs didn't quite have
what it takes to reach the highest mountain tops. This album has it all -
wonderful melodies, extremely complex passages, heavy progressive riffs and
lots of experimental sounds. Anything but vocals. Making an instrumental
album, especially one lasting for more than an hour, that is varied and
intense enough to be interesting all the way through is one of the most
difficult tasks in the world of music but Liquid Tension Experiment have done
it. This is no doubt one of the most impressive instrumental albums of all
time and if you like progressive music in any form this is a
must.
