REVIEW: Litham - Dhal Ennar Self-financed, 1999
6.5/10
Litham - Dhal Ennar - cover art Litham is a unique band that I think very few of you know of before. They are actually from Algeria, a country that has been haunted by political violence ever since the French decided that it was their land. European imperialism has brought a lot of problems onto this world and keep doing so but the violence in Algeria may also have brought something good with it namely the introduction of metal. Litham was formed in 1996 in the ashes of another band called Neanderthalia and in 1999 they released this album which was the first album ever released by an Algerian metal band. You may expect this album to be comprised of lousy primitive metal and cursed by a crappy production but this is definitely not the case. The production is professionally done and sounds as good as you could possibly expect from a financially unsupported band. The music is based mostly on traditional metal riffs but there are also plenty of unusual Arabic rhythms that I've never heard before, most clearly heard in the excellent opening track. The band is also equipped with a very good growler but sometimes nice clear voices can be heard as well. This is a unique recording and I've never heard anything like this before. Highly recommended for fans of Orphaned Land and atmospheric dark / death metal in general. I think the album is still available through Hellion Records in France.
