REVIEW: Lo Scatolino Sporco - demo 2003 Self-financed, 2003
6.5/10
Lo Scatolino Sporco - demo 2003 - cover art Lo Scatolino Sporco is Italian and means "The Dirty Little Box". Not surprisingly the band is also from Italy and was created in the spring of 2001 by a group of musicians in their early to mid 20s, influenced by modern rock, cross-over, atmospheric music, funk and nu-metal. This is, as I understand, their second demo after which they have had some success at various metal and rock contests in their country. Musically they often sound like a less experimental version of Rage Against The Machine post their self-titled debut (which is one of the pioneering masterpieces of the 90s unless you have understood that already) and the semi-rapping front man comes close to Zach de la Rocha on more than one occasion. There is one more vocalist in the band who handles clean, soft vocals (Savage Garden anyone?) and his voice makes for a very nice contrast and he is also a more interesting singer than what is usually found in the nu-metal bands of today.

Lo Scatolino Sporco shows a wider range of influences than most bands in the genre and I particularly like their calmer, atmospheric interludes which gives the listener time to relax and think about what they're experiencing. There is a strong funky vibe over this demo which I personally enjoy a lot and Lo Scatolino Sporco come off as a rather interesting band. Unfortunately they recycle their ideas a little too often and more diversity in the material would have been nice. Maybe next time they will make it big, who knows? But then again, the nu-metal trend has reached its climax already and has begun to fade away by now. Good music never dies though. System Of A Down meets Rage Against The Machine meets Faith No More.
