REVIEW: Lock Up - Hate Breeds Suffering Nuclear Blast, 2002
8/10
Lock Up - Hate Breeds Suffering - cover art “Lock Up” is a term in which drummer Nick Barker describes as, “LOCK UP - THE ART OF STIFFENING THE ARMS DURING THE EXECUTION OF AN ELONGATED BLAST BEAT”. By the sounds of his drumming on this LP, his arms must have been Locked Up for weeks, if not months!! Joining Nick Barker (Cradle of Filth, Dimmu Borgir) to form Lock Up are, Shane Embury and Jesse Pintado from Napalm Death. While, Tomas Lindberg (Grotesque, At the Gates, Skitsystem, Disfear) has taken over on vocal duty. Replacing Peter Tägtgren (Hypocrisy) who recorded the vox for the first Lock Up LP “Pleasures Pave Sewers”. Hate Breeds Suffering was recorded in 5 days by this all-star line up, and is a brooding album which is blasted from the beginning of “Feeding the Opiate” till the finish of “The Sixth Extinction”. It’s old school grind, but produced really well. This album is very intense, as Nick barker rules the kit!! He keeps the mayhem at a constant, while Jesse Pintado and Shane Embury are working overtime as they split their fingers to severed tips, and bleed all over this 16 song LP with their masterful riffing. Tomas Lindberg rips at you all the while with his vocals, and proves once again why he’s a legend in the Death/grind scene. Some of the songs on Hate Breeds Suffering could easily be mistaken for early Napalm Death or Terrorizer material, but they still work, and even equal those bands of yesteryear. The only downfall with this LP is that while there are some truly kick ass songs on the album, there are more songs that just get forgotten. The best tracks are: “Feeding the Opiate”, “The Jesus Virus”, “Violent Reprisal”, “Detestation”, “Hate Breeds Suffering”, and “The Sixth Extinction”. What I like the most about this band/album is the fact that it has the urgency of a live atmosphere to it. The production isn’t over done, and you can slap it on, rock out to it while having great fun, without taking it too seriously.
