REVIEW: Long Winter's Stare - The Tears Of Odin's Fallen Dark Symphonies, 2000
6.5/10
Long Winter's Stare - The Tears Of Odin's Fallen - cover art The releases from the American label Dark Symphonies are mostly very unique and different from what you usually hear coming from other metal labels. They do have one thing in common though and that is the dark melancholic atmosphere. "The Tears Of Odin's Fallen" is the third album from this American band that play some kind of dark metal with symphonic overtones. To enjoy the epic compositions of Long Winter's Stare I suggest that you lay back and relax, take a deep cold breath of evening air and embrace the warm obscure darkness of the night. This kind of music is not really easy-listened and I think it requires a certain state of mind or mood that you may find in front of the fire in a quiet house in the middle of nowhere at night. There are six real songs on this album (the first one is more of an intro) and all of them leave a very dark inprint behind. Long Winter's Stare has mixed doomy and driving guitars, very deep growls, spoken words and classical piano and then added a thickening touch of symphonic keyboards. Not to forget there are also quite a lot of female vocals, some of them very nice such as the melodic chorus of "Blood Of Steel". I wouldn´t recommend this album to the faint-hearted but if you have the courage to let your ears experience something new it might be worth checking out. I wouldn´t either want to go as far as proclaiming this to be a masterpiece. The music is not that impressing itself but it does have a very emotional atmosphere and beautiful female vocals that alone makes the album listenable. To take use of a Testament song this is music only for those of you carrying souls of black and open minds.
