The recently resurrected and refounded Combat Records is back with yet another curious post-Hardcore release. Once home to the mighty Death and Megadeth but not Gigadeath (haha!), Combat's 3rd release comes from the L.A. by way of Nashville, TN group Look What I Did. "What do they play?" you might ask. Well, if you're familiar with Combat's previous 2 new releases, this is essentially more of the same, though less pretentious and effectively more listenable than Horse the Band and At All Cost.
The accompanying press release has little in the way of promoting the band in terms of describing them, but the CD case sticker offers a few tidbits: "At times caustic and violent, at others melodic and dripping with irony... Look What I Did are a highly enjoyable aural mess" and "If you like" Dead Kennedys, Dillinger Escape Plan, The Blood Brothers buy this album!!" This record differs from Combat's other new releases in that 2, count 'em, 2 exclamation points admonish you to buy this album instead of 1.
As I intimated in the Horse the Band review, I just don't get the new Combat Records. As I stated before, maybe they are way ahead of the curve. However, I think they are dangerously close to crashing into the ass-end of the current scope of the Dillinger Escape Plan, with this, the second CD claiming it to be for fans of DEP. Why limit yourselves, Combat? Look What I Did might appeal to System of a Down fans, too. At least there are no vocoder effects or Nintendo sounds here, mercifully enough. The website name pretty much says it all.
