REVIEW: Lord Belial - Scythe Of Death Metal Fortress Entertainment, 2003
7/10
Lord Belial - Scythe Of Death - cover art Lord Belial is one of a handful Swedish black metal bands who have stood against the winds of change since the early 90s. Several succesful albums have proved their position as one of the leaders in their genre. When "Angelgrinder" was released in 2002 there was one track missing from the album which the band had wanted to place there namely "Purify Sweden". This song was considered too lyrically controversial to release by their then record company No Fashion Records / MNW. It was however released on vinyl by the small Swedish label Metal Fortress Entertainment and now it can also be found on this mini album from the same company as a bonus track. "Scythe Of Death" starts off with the title track, a somewhat unusual Lord Belial song as it is slow and atmospheric with a lot of keyboards backing up the rest of the instruments and Dark's raging vocals. It's a little too long for its own good but still a pleasant experience. Next comes "Black Void" which is my favorite on this album as its the most varied one with both fast and aggressive black metal and some calmer moments which work nicely together and creates some interesting contrasting elements. The last two tracks, including the so much talked about "Purify Sweden", are not bad at all either but they don't really stick out as excellent. A nice little mini album that will still the hunger for the fans while awaiting the band's fifth full-length which should be released by their new record company Regain Records in June.
