REVIEW: Loudness - Racing Drakkar Records, 2005
7/10
Loudness - Racing - cover art The legendary Japanese heavy metal veterans Loudness are now releasing their new album "Racing" on the European market (the Japanese people could enjoy it in late November last year already). Even though they will probably never again reach the kind of success they experienced in the 80s when they even got to tour with Mötley Crüe in the US, the Japanese metallers do not surrender. Akira Takasaki once again displays his extraordinary skills as a guitarist and the fourteen songs on "Racing" are quite diverse, ranging from classic thunderous hard rock and heavy metal to the melodic death / thrash riffing of "Lunatic". If you are new to their music you will most likely have to take some time to adjust yourself to the quite unorthodox singing style of frontman Minoru Niihara. Once you have removed that obstacle the road lies free in front of you and all you need to to is lay back and relax and let Loudness take you on a ride which is not easy to forget. More than 25 years into their career they are still dedicated to the shore where they once set out their sails in order to conquer the world. If, for some strange reason, an album's worth of new material would not be enough to quench your thirst for Japanese heavy metal the limited edition of "Racing" includes a second disc comprised of thirteen re-recorded best of tracks such as the immortal classic "Crazy Nights". No real hit songs to be found but nonetheless an even album and money well spent.
