REVIEW: Lucifugum - On Hooks To Pieces! Oaken Shield, 2003
6/10
Lucifugum - On Hooks To Pieces! - cover art Lucifugum is one of many young black metal bands from the Ukraine and like many others they have ties to the well known band Nokturnal Mortum. They are not in any way related to the Spanish black metal band bearing the same name. The Ukrainian Lucifugum was formed in 1995 and they have released several tapes meant mainly for the Eastern European market but now they have signed a deal with the French label Oaken Shield to be able spread their name on an international level. The band have gone through several years of hardship, including the death of their member Bal-a-Myth in October 2002 after a drug overdose. "On Hooks To Pieces!" is basically a raw, cold and primitive black metal release but there are some small surprises that you wouldn't expect such as symphonic keyboards and some more ambient sections. In this aspect they are actually somewhat similar to Nokturnal Mortum which isn't quite as surprising considering the relationship between the two bands. The music of Lucifugum, although rather generic in its nature, is nonetheless of rather high quality and it shows that the band has been together for a long time. There are two things I have to object on with the first being the vocals that aren't exactly bad but they should be louder in my opinion. The second is that the keyboards sound very cheap. I think that they should stay away from using them as frequently until they have a larger budget to spend. All lyrics are apparently in Russian which means that I have absolutely no clue as to what they are about. A decent album, nothing more, nothing less.
