REVIEW: Lucifugum - The Supreme Art Of Genocide Propaganda, 2006
7.5/10
Lucifugum - The Supreme Art Of Genocide - cover art This is already the 11th full length album from this Ukrainian horde! Together with Nokturnal Mortum and Astrofaes they are the most influential BM band from this country. All these bands offer some innovative and fresh BM and have important positions in the worldwide scene. Another characteristic of Ukrainian scene is the frequent combination of NS imagery and attitudes with BM which I can’t say I love. The Supreme Art of Genocide delivers six new songs that, after several listenings, I undoubtedly found to be living up to publishers advertisement ‘Antihuman Poisonous Black Metal’. This is just that, poisonous and very evil (i.e. antihuman). The music Lucifugum plays is original and the best term I could come up with for describing their music is ‘vampiric’ and also ‘poisonous’. I constantly have ghoulish visions while listening to it. You have this semi-monotonous music going on throughout the whole album and these really demonic shrieking vocals over it. The music is maybe some combination of early At the Gates in terms of two guitars playing different tones in harmony and lots of mid-tempo bass drums, just like ‘With Fear I Kiss…’ but much more sinister, cold and also it gets very monotonous (I have no doubt it’s on purpose) the deeper you delve into the album, and there it reminds me of either Burzum or Nargaroth (atmosphere-wise, not music-wise, I hope you get my point). I would have wished for some more speed on this album, not a single blast-beat to be found, but I guess Lucifugum is not about speed. The song I found most appealing is the final ‘Na Smert’ (‘To Death’). By the way, the whole album is sung in the Ukrainian / Russian language and lyrics are written with Cyrillic letters, so all non-Slavic folk, don’t even think about reading ‘em and sing-along hehe. The album comes with a ‘ritual obscurantism’ video, but since my WM Prayer is refusing to work and it’s needed to play this clip, I can’t say how it looks, sorry. The production is ok, specific, a bit dirty, but quite suitable for the music. Cover is b/w and I guess this is all the information you need for this review?
