REVIEW: Lunar Aurora - Mond Cold Dimensions, 2005
7.5/10
Lunar Aurora - Mond - cover art When their debut album "Weltengänger" was released in 1996, Lunar Aurora quickly established themselves as one of the leading German black metal bands. The band's latest opus - "Mond" - stays true to their tried out concept of fast, aggressive, harsh, cold and minimalistic black metal. It is dark, ominous and oppressive in its nature but for those of you who do not fear the unknown there is more to be discovered beneath the surface. Creating waves of melancholy inbetween madness and chaos there are well placed keyboards, adding a depressing touch that is clearly one of the most important characteristics of Lunar Aurora's song writing technique. It separates them from the black metal masses, making them much more than a typical act who are so true to the black metal spirit that it bleeds. "Mond" captures the essence of the early to mid 90s black metal movement but it does so without sounding outdated. Without even getting close to cheesy gothic romanticism they manage to create an eerie and epic setting where all light is gone. It is not a masterpiece of monumental proportions but it is a dark piece of fine art. The soundtrack to our demise.
