REVIEW: Lunaris - Cyclic Elitist Records, 2004
8/10
Lunaris - Cyclic - cover art I was mighty impressed with the debut album from Norway's Lunaris when it was released in 2002. Blending well produced extreme black / death metal with strong progressive tendencies they created a mixture with a very powerful punch. The follow-up album "Cyclic" turned out to live up to the expectations I had on it. Not only are these musicians some of the most skilled instrumentalists on the Norwegian extreme metal scene but they also know how to put together good songs. I should emphasize that this is, just like all other bands under the Elitist banner, not for everyone. There are plenty of twists and turns and you can never guess what is to come next. This kind of unpredictability is what I appreciate the most about this band. On "Cyclic" we also have a number of noteworthy guests in bass maestro Steve Digiorgio (Testament, Death, Sadus etc.), Eric Peterson (Testament, Dragonlord), Asgeir Mickelson (Borknagar, Spiral Architect) and Steinar "Sverd" Johnsen (Arcturus, Covenant). This is one of those cds that has it all - the aggressive bite of death metal, the raw primitive edge of black metal and the surprising changes of progressive rock / metal. You never know what to expect from these guys but if you are tired of every standard pattern metal band and looking for that little extra then give Lunaris a chance.
