Violins and female soprano vocals is something that most fans of modern gothic metal are familiar with. However, digging deeper into the rich world of music we find other bands where the same musical expressions can be found, only in a much more calm and soothing environment. Here we find the Italian band Lupercalia who released their debut album "Soehrimnir" on World Serpent in the year 2000. Four years later their follow-up is presented to the world by their new label, Portugal's Equilibrium Music. "Florilegium" is latin, the old language for European scholars, and means a "collection of script". The lyrics are also almost completely in latin, something that helps to create a somewhat mysterious and medieval atmosphere. Lupercalia is a fine contribution to the neo-classical scene which has grown rather strong in Italy over the past few years. The instrumental parts often show Eastern influences and the new soprano singer Claudia Florio has a very strong voice, further giving this album a powerful character. In fact, "Florilegium" would be a close to perfect soundtrack to an art history book. Calm melodies, a warm embracing atmosphere, violins, acoustic guitars, spoken voices and Claudia's soprano vocals will take you back in time as you let the spirits of our past walk with you side by side. The cover art is beautiful and everything about this album bears witness of a high level of professionalism from both the label and the band. Definitely recommended for all fans of neo-classical gothic / medieval music. Out in the stores on May 18th, 2004.
