REVIEW: Lust, The - My Dear Emptiness Sleaszy Rider Records, 2005
7/10
Lust, The - My Dear Emptiness - cover art The Lust came together in St. Petersburg, Russia, in 2003 when a group of musicians decided to join forces after having been active in various projects. At first they were known as Lust Embrace and released their debut album "Tangled" already the following year through the native label Fono Records. Now they have switched to the Greek independent label Sleaszy Rider Records. There were two things that struck me right away when listening to their sophomore effort, one positive and one negative point. The negative one is that the production is a little bit of a budget sound. It is not bad at all but some more energy could have been pushed out of the band's music which is a well structured mix of power metal, melodeath, gothic metal and slightly progressive elements. The final result is quite interesting actually and The Lust are not afraid to experiment with various ideas. While the music has its ups and downs the main attraction of the band is no doubt the female vocalist Mirla who is a huge talent at the mere age of 16. Her tender and beautiful voice adds somewhat of a dreamy Theatre Of Tragedy touch to the album although she's far from a Liv Kristine copy. A catchy and gothic tinged heavy metal cd that should show the world that there are some interesting things going on in the Russian underground.
