Månegarm is one of those acts who have been around since forever and released one album after another without really getting that magic recognition. They have however made themselves a name as one of the leading viking metal bands and with this album at least one major change has taken place as they have parted ways with long-time colleages Displeased Records from the Netherlands in order to sign with the native label Black Lodge (in-house label of major Swedish distributors Sound Pollution). Musically Månegarm have not made any significant change or progression though, for good and bad I assume. I am sure many old fans will embrace the continuation of their mixture of folk influenced black / death metal where calm, moody passages go hand in hand with fast and melodic ones. There is also the danger of losing a few fans who may think their new album "Vargstenen" does not offer them anything else nor better than the previous releases do.
Månegarm have not failed on this project and I greatly admire their celebration of past traditions of the Nordic countries in general and Sweden in particular but these 53 minutes tend to offer the listener few, if any, surprises. In fact, there are times when the songs bore the hell out of me which is unfortunate as there are several strong pieces to be found here such as the epic intro "Uppvaknande" as well as "Minnen" and "Visioner På Isen" with their evident folk music touches. Charming and enjoyable as always, this is what you would expect from Månegarm, nothing more, nothing less.
