REVIEW: Mörk Gryning - Maelstrom Chaos No Fashion Records, 2001
7/10
Mörk Gryning - Maelstrom Chaos - cover art With two albums behind them already Mörk Gryning has become one of the leading Swedish black metal acts together with Marduk and Dark Funeral. Now they are back with their third opus entitled "Maelstrom Chaos" and with a slightly different line-up they continue their dark and atmospheric style in the true spirit of their previous releases. In other words fans of the band should not be disappointed with this album. Mörk Gryning doesn't have the same intensity and quality as Dark Funeral but there is still a lot to enjoy on this album, especially the furious fourth track called "The Menace", which is the highlight of this new release, at least to me. What is most likely to be appreciated on the new album is the band's ability to mix speed and brutality with atmosphere and melody, something very difficult to achieve if you are not a capable musician. The members of Mörk Gryning are well-known on the Swedish metal scene and have been involved with many other bands before. Their experience is beginning to get very evident in the music because there is a very mature impression delivered with the black violence of "Maelstrom Chaos". The chaos of this album is therefore very well-structured but no less intense than before.
