REVIEW: Mörk Gryning - Pieces Of Primal Expressionism No Fashion Records, 2003
7/10
Mörk Gryning - Pieces Of Primal Expressionism - cover art The Swedish band Mörk Gryning have been spewing out their black art to the masses since 1993 and now they are one of the few remaining artists left on the No Fashion label. "Pieces Of Primal Expressionism" is their fourth full-length album so far and it is also their most versatile one. You might even want to say that this release marks the entering into a new era of the band because this is very different from what they have done in the past. Their black metal roots are not abandoned anywhere but they have let themselves experiment more and broaden their horizons this time. First off they are the first real black metal band to use Daniel Bergstrand's Dug Out studio (Meshuggah, In Flames, Soilwork etc.) with a resulting crystal clear production. Second, they have included unusual but interesting guest appearances from trombone player Nick Eastop (The Chamber Orchestra of Europe) and violin player Ulrika Eastop. The former member Avatar (Mattias Eklund) also guests with a couple of solos and the assisting producer Örjan Örnkloo contributes with some synths and samples. I don't know if it depends on the new keyboard player Aeon or not but this album show industrial influences as well which is apparently an ongoing trend in black metal scene right now. The industrial touch, together with the production, makes the overall atmosphere a bit sterile and the violin parts don't really fit in. Sometimes it feels like they were included just for the sake of it. It is a fresh new Mörk Gryning that we get to hear but despite the mature sound, tight playing and stellar production, the songs of this album don't impress me that much more than the ones of their previous one. Mörk Gryning dedicate this album to everyone who attended their gig at Wacken Open Air 2002. A solid black metal release but not a masterpiece. Stand-out tracks: "The Sleeping Star", "The Cradle Of Civilization".
