REVIEW: Macbeth - Vanitas Dragonheart Records, 2001
6/10
Macbeth - Vanitas - cover art The debut album from the Italian band Macbeth became one of the best sellers of the Dragonheart catalogue and now they are back again with their followup entitled "Vanitas". This time they have chosen a more aggressive approach coloured in black. I don't know if this was a wise choice of not because I feel absolutely nothing when listening to this album. The music is uninspiring and I think Shakespeare would be ashamed if he knew what his works were used for today. There are however a few bright moments on the album, above all the somewhat playful keyboard melodies that occasionally raises the musical quality. Macbeth have tried hard to create gothic metal that captures the Shakespearean atmosphere but unfortunately they still have a lot to improve on. The album is not entirely bad and I was even slightly impressed by one of the songs ("Diablo y la Luna") but I would only recomment this one to hardcore Shakespeare or gothic metal fans. Perhaps I should have given them a higher rating based on the beauty of their female vocalist Morena but that would not have been very fair...
