Mactätus is latin for
slaughter and sacrifice, a name befitting of a black metal band.
This is
actually a very old band that was formed in 1989 but they had some problems
establishing a stable line-up and it wasn't until 1997 that they had the
chance to release their debut album through the small French label Embassy
Productions. Embassy ripped the band off but now they are signed to Napalm
Records who are much more serious about what they do. Their Napalm debut and
their second full-length release in all is called "Provenance Of Cruelty"
and shows a black metal band in the same vein as Dimmu Borgir with a very vast
use of keyboard symphonies. Mactätus is a band that stands on their own though
and I wouldn't want to call them a Dimmu Borgir copycat because they simply
aren't one. Their keyboard arrangements are less classical in their nature
even though there are some of those here as well. Instead they are mostly used
to create an eery atmosphere and to induce more power into the music in which
they are most successful. Another ingredience that we don't find in the music
of Dimmu Borgir is the use of female vocals on a couple of tracks. They are
done by a woman named Kathrine Abrahamsen who has been active for a long time
in many bands, mostly Irish folk music. Now she gets the chance to appear on a
black metal album for the very first time I suspect and she does a wonderful
job. Her way of singing is very unusual but it sounds great. If you like Dimmu
Borgir, Emperor or Peccatum you would probably want to check out this album
because it is a very good one. Nocturno Culto of Darkthrone fame also helped
out to write the lyrics of the opening track. Stand-out tracks: "Draped In
Shadows Of Satan's Pride", "Sleepless Souls", "En Trone Vevd Av
Tid".
