Mactätus is one of the oldest of the Norwegian
black metal bands and was formed when it all started back in 1989 or 1990.
"Suicide" is the fourth full-length album from the band and the third on
their current label Napalm Records. This time the band chose to record their
album at The Abyss together with Lars Szöke and Peter Tägtgren which
results in a very non ear-friendly and powerful sound similar to Hypocrisy
("Into The Abyss" period). The last album from the band featured a somewhat
naked woman on the cover which was taken as an insult by some reviewers who
obviously have a problem with naked skin, in particular of the female kind.
This has been a marketing technique used by Napalm for some time now and
although I don't mind that much the new cover from Mactätus shows the
complete opposite which in this case is a young man in a bath tub with his
wrists sliced. This doesn't matter much though because the thing that matters
is of course the music and despite the cover, which may seem tasteless to
some, Mactätus have yet again delivered a solid piece of Norwegian black metal
dressed in a very powerful sound coating. Musically in the field somewhere
between old Immortal and old Dimmu Borgir they do not really bring anything
new to the world but they are still today one of a handful quality bands from
the past who are still active on the scene. Intense, powerful and raging black
metal with a symphonic undertone is what you can expect from this release and
if that is your cup of tea then go for it. I personally prefer their
"Provenance Of Cruelty" album but if you thought that one was too symphonic
then you might prefer this one
instead.
